Middle School Student Poetry
2005 - 2006 Page #2
6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Poetry written under the guidance of
Potomac Elementary School Poet in Residence Alex Tinari

Note : Some of these students wrote poems that began with a made-up definition for an unfamiliar word. They were not told the real definition of the word until after they wrote their poems. I’ve included the definition for the word below these poems.

6th Grade: 2005-2006

Macher
by Monica Dierken

Macher is when you talk out loud, very fast,
you can’t stop talking. You go so fast
that you annoy people and they go ballistic
and you are machering. Machering may be a bad thing, if you are not the one machering. But maybe it could be good if you like to talk about lots of
things.
This word is an example of me, only when I’m not in a down mood. I’ve known people who just can’t stop machering, but they still aren’t bad people, but…
we still don’t know if they are because the scientists have been on their lunch breaks forever,
so they aren’t investigating or experimenting to see if machering is bad. So you may never know. Maybe it is bad because you will become deaf in your right ear if you get machered.

Real definition of macher: a person who gets things done.

My True Story

by Allyson Stiner-Ployhar

I was three or four when it happened.
I walked into a room with my cousins,
aunts, and uncles. I was happy as could be
for some reason. Everyone looked sad.
I didn’t know what to think. I looked over
on a small platform bed and saw him. I felt
a little shock. Then after a while of quiet talking
and sobbing and tears, something popped
into my head, like my favorite pie and ice cream
on a sunny day. I thought what a relief
that it wasn’t really him, it was someone like him
but not actually him. I told this to my aunt.
My aunt’s reply: No, this is him, he’s gone.
I felt sadder than ever. I started sobbing.
My face was the reddest of all. I didn’t know him
that well, but still he was my friend. One of my best, and he was gone in the human form.
But he’ll always be with me forever.

Life
by Cody Helms

is so unpredictable
when you go home
you just don’t know
what’s going to happen
you get inside
your fish may have died
or your dog or a relative.

Macher
by Teri Tritz

Macher is when the dinosaurs lived and ate plants and animals.

It think it would be cool to see a real dino because I would see

their gnashing teeth and sharp claws grabbing and tearing

the skin of another animal. And to see those eyes that stare

back at you.

Real definition of macher: a person who gets things done.

The Ocean Just Like Us
by Katie Jardine

The ocean is like a girl
jumping on her bed, jumping round
and round like a whirlwind.
The talk, the madness all
swinging around like the ocean’s
underground, so busy.
The busy street is like
an ocean’s traffic. Swimming,
full, too much fish. Too many cars
crashing in the day.
The fish are like cars
getting killed but driving themselves.
Just like us.

Metamorphosis
by Jordan Lutz

Be just like him. Grow up and be a father.
“Enjoy being a child,” father said, “Enjoy life
while you can.” Be strong, be happy, be just like
father. Exactly like the best dad. Do stuff together,
like hunting, riding motorcycles, lifting weights.
To get taller, to transform. Voices getting taller
and taller. Then a man. Then what? Go to page 34
in Ecology of Man. Read, listen, learn, lose place,
find that word, go, read. What’s going on here?
Where is this going? to a black hole, down and
down.
You go, you’re falling away, down you go.
“Gone.” As fast as the winds carry the snow.
Shwoooosh, white goes down, down.

My Room
by Courtney Teila Roesler

I live in a room that is filled with dreams.
When I woke up, I was no longer in the room.
Suddenly, the house started to shake.
I ran up to my dreamroom. Then I felt
the ground stop shaking. I was happy.
Then the ground started to disappear.
the clouds were now under the mountains
and the sun was starting to sink into the ocean’s
deep.
The moon was no longer there, the planet Pluto
was where the sun was before, and then
my dream as over.

Cats and Dogs
by Brandon C. Ransom

A cat to a dog.
They both have tails.
They both are round.
Sometimes they even go
to the pound. But even
when they are old, they
still run to and fro
like the traffic going
back and forth.

Eupeptic
by Mitchell Hall

Eupeptic is the wind blowing
through the tree, it is oxygen
that you breathe, it is the animal
that is still undiscovered, it is the coldest
spot on earth. It’s the cure
for every disease, every poison, every
broken chip or cracked bone, it is
the cure for diseases unknown to man,
it is the lion sleeping with the lamb.

Real definition of eupeptic: of or having good digestion.

A Dragon is Hunting
by Megan Daniels

A dragon who is hunting his prey
is like an active volcano ready to blow.
The fire is churning inside his belly.
He is waiting and waiting for the right
time to fire. He is waiting to blow his top
and let lava flow, destroying everything
in his path for his dinner. Finally,
he finds the prey – a furry bunny. He blows
and the forest is instantly blackened.
His prey is dead. The volcano has erupted
and now goes back to sleep.

Precaution
by Ryan Granger

A poisonous spider is a buzzer toy.
It looks harmless, without a care.
But if you dare to pick it up,
it will harm you, and if it could talk
it would say, “You knew I was a spider
when you picked me up.”

Wood to Ashes
by Sam Hall

Wood smells like sap. Feels coarse,
looks brown, silvery.

Ashes smell of smoke, feel like
sand, look like black sand.

The wood is sitting there
peacefully.

You pick it up. Feel
its coarseness.

Put it in the firepit.
Take out the matches,
light it on fire.
Watch it burn,
flames flickering.
The light wind
blowing the smoke toward you
and you move.
Get close, feel the hot flames.
After a while, the piece of wood
gets smaller and turns completely black.
The firs burns down, dies out,
and there is just
ashes to be seen.
Small, black, sand-like, and warm.

Niveous
Lane Lomont

Niveous is an animal from a different planet.
It has six legs and two eyes. It eats plants.
It’s two feet tall, but it is light as a feather.
And it lives in Finland.

The real definition of niveous: snowy or resembling snow

Niveous
by Kaitlynn Wood

Niveous is the sound of an echo in a cave,
bouncing off of the walls and coming back to you
like you’re screaming and screaming because
you are going down a water slide and it is
pitch dark and you don’t know when
you are going to come out of the dark,
treacherous tunnel. Who knows if you ever will,
who knows if you will come out of the dark slide?

The real definition of niveous: snowy or resembling snow

Niveous
by Amber Christensen

Niveous is a type of lawnmower
that cuts a certain way
so that flowers in the lawn do not get cut down,
but the grass does.
So these lawnmowers are very expensive
and are made over in Chile
and have a Chile design on them.
They also cut what flowers you want,
so of you just want to keep the pink flowers
it will cut down the rest.

When I Was a Child
by Crystal Widberg

When I was a child, toys and games
were my thing. Flowers were beautiful
so I ate them. I would lose my glasses
on purpose. Snow was cold and wet.
Pink was my color, but I lost it in the
wind. Forests were a place to play.
Friends were loving and yet, boring.
