Ms. Zempler’s News

It’s the end of the month already and we have started the fourth and last quarter of the year.  With the end of the school year in sight and the days getting longer, please remind your child that it is very important to keep their focus in school.

In fourth grade reading language arts students are finishing the fifth unit and will soon be starting their last unit.  They have been reading stories about people helping one another. This has been a fun unit because students were able to see how they could help one another and even how animals help people. In the next unit students will be excited to read a story called, The Toothpaste Millionaire.  This is a story that has been made into a play. Students love this play every year.

In writing we have begun a new unit on persuasive writing.  Students had to pick a school event that they wanted to write a persuasive paragraph about. In this paragraph they had to name the event and say why they felt it was the best school event. Below I have listed the events they picked; see if you can guess which event is your child’s favorite.

LOCK-IN               COMPUTER CLUB                             SPIRIT WEEK                                  SUMMER SCHOOL                           SWIMMING LESSONS                              SCIENCE FAIR

In math students are learning abut 3-D shapes. They recently built these shapes using toothpicks as edges and marshmallows as vertices (points). The students had a great time and really enjoyed the activity. I also sent them on a treasure hunt; it was fun to see all of the things that they found. One thing that you could work with your child on is memorizing their subtraction facts. We have been working on them in class but a little extra at home would be great for your child.

In home economics my students finished their cooking class. All of the students did great. They had a good time learning the basics about cooking and cleaning. Having your child help in the kitchen would be fun and helpful.  Have them help you cook dinner this week and see what they have learned.

Mrs. Hill’s class has been working on their quilts. We hope that they will be finishing them soon to bring home to show you. The quilts look good and the students are proud of their work. You will be too. The sixth grade students will be making pillows this quarter.  They will be using the sewing machines to create their project.

That’s all for now!

Mrs. Zempel
