Dixon School District

and

Happy Fall to all of you, we hope you are enjoying the beautiful trees!  The first and second graders were very involved this week with activities for Red Ribbon Week, including a fun visit from helicopter pilots!  They learned a lot about saying NO to drugs and alcohol.  We hope these activities will start kids off on the right path.

We are all looking forward to the Halloween party on Friday.  Here is what we have been learning this month:

Science:

The First and Second graders finished a unit about light and heat.  They learned about the different light sources, importance of light, shadows, colors, and heat energy.  We will be finishing a quick unit on apples at the end of the month in celebration of the National Apple Month of October.  We will be making applesauce and shrunken apple heads, just in time for Halloween!

1st Grade Reading:

The first graders have already passed their first unit in reading with flying colors!  They are learning more and more words everyday!  Please practice these words with them:

no      ride   small  out   saw    very    want  two    away good  into   put

1st Grade Math:

In math we just finished our unit on addition to 10.  All students are learning how to count up and can add facts quickly.  We are starting our unit on subtraction from 10.

Don’t forget to keep up with those homework folders – it will help their reading fluency and spelling!
